Developed by Altman and Taylor in 1973 Altman studied social and environmental psychology Taylor is best known for work on racism Tradition: socio-psychological Context: interpersonal Approach to knowing: empirical Believes relationship development occurs in a systematic fashion (Stage theory) Relationships developdue to self-disclosure, and relational closeness develops if they engage in gradual increases in depth and breadth of self-disclosure content Peripheral items are exchanged more frequently and sooner than private info (things you don’t mind sharing) Self-disclosure is reciprocal, esp in early stages of relationship development Social penetration is rapid at start, but slows down quick Assumptions 1) Relationships progress from nonintimate to intimate 2) Relational development is generally systematic and predictable 3) Relational development includes depenetration and dissolution 4) Self-disclosure is at the core of relationship development Stages Orientation Stage
