use of the Cann Laboratory (see rules for use distributed at the start of term
and available at the course website).

Using the Cann Laboratory photoelasticity apparatus, determine the max
imum shear stress along a line normal to the boundary of a square Homalite100
sample, for loads of 25, 50, 100, and 150 pounds. Derive an equation for the
maximum shear stress as a function of load per unit thickness and radius along
the normal line. How does your equation compare to the analytical solution for a
concentrated load on the boundary of an infinitely large plate (reference: Timo
shenko and Goodier, Theory of Elasticity, Article 33)? Quantify the uncertainty
of your experimental equation and provide an error analysis in comparison to
the analytical solution.
