Equality 1. Has not been an important quality till recently because social equality wasn’t a reality (no one was equal) hierarchy and inequality seemed more natural and was much more common a. in western civilization equality had 2 sources (neither concepts attempted to eradicate social inequality) a.i. Stocism: began in ancient Greece and was dominant philosophy of Romans, discussed the idea of universal brotherhood, linked together through reason, emphasize importance of nature and natural. Humans are equal bc through reason they could understand and follow natural law. Sought to destroy “bonds” that divided people (philosophically) a.i.1. Zeno: creator of Stocism a.i.2. Cicero a.i.3. Seneca a.i.4. Marcus Aurilius a.ii. Christianity: brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of god. All were equal in god’s eyes and all are capable of earning salvation. a.ii.1. Book of Galicians: Paul says all are one under Jesus a.ii.2. Women were prominent in early Christianity (Woman at the Well)
