Whitehouse 1 Anna Whitehouse WMS 210 Professor Schlag 5 March 2011 Response Paper Assignment #1 I chose to discuss the article “The Truth About Teens and Sex” by Ellen Goodman published in the Boston Globe on January 3, 2009. The date this article appeared is important because the Bush Administration was just coming to a close and President Obama had yet to take office. Goodman argues that the “Abstinence-Only” educational approach that the Bush Administration sank $1.5 billion into is entirely ineffective. Citing a study done by Janet Rosenbaum, a John Hopkins researcher, where 1,000 teens took a pledge of abstinence, one way the government claims the abstinence-only program is working, and found there was no difference between these kids and their peers who hadn’t taken the pledge as to when they started having sex. Sadly, the only difference was that when they did begin having sex they were much less likely to be safe. I find it hard to believe that the Bush Administration was so dedicated to putting American teenagers at risk. This simply proves, in my opinion, the necessity of
