Pollard HST 103 September 24, 2009 The Ottomans, the Europeans and the Seas Much like the Chinese, thought of ppl outside of their borders as contemptible, didn’t see the point in going out into the world. Did have a navy, had the ability but not the interest. They didn’t need new ports/alliances etc. liked land better than sea. Had a massive chain that they would put across the phosphorous to keep ppl from sailing into the city. Interested in their own capital and ruling style. Believed they had captured paradise and built the most cosmo city in the world 670 tribunals (houses of justice) Hamam—“public bath houses” segregated by sex, for free spend the day Khan—market places/bizzares covered, gave merchants a safe place to sleep Qahwa—“coffee” coffee houses very popular, originated in Ethiopia, male only, smoked shisha. Story tellers, political talk etc. Istanbul became a major coffee depot in the world Sufis were mystics, groups of muslims, wanted more than the regular religious
