Amit Patel p3 9/8/11 Rubrics: Each Homework Assignment: Total 20 points Extra Credit over 10 assignments: 2 points each, up to maximum 30 points Homework #2 : Chapter 2 1. Distinguish between an element and a compound. An element is a substance made of only one type of atom(type of atom meaning same number of protons). However, a compound is a substance made of multiple elements combined in a fixed ratio. - Element one type of atom - Compound more than one type of element combined - Consistent ratio between elements 2. Identify the four elements that make up 96% of living matter. Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Nitrogen make up 96% of all living matter. However, Carbon and Oxygen make up more 80% of a human body. This is because all macromolecules are based on carbon, and oxygen is the most prevalent element(by mass) in water, which makes up more than half a human’s body weight. -Carbon- 4 covalent bonds, forms macromolecules -Oxygen- part of water and fuels respiration - Hydrogen- part of water, and part of many macromolecules -Nitrogen 3. Define the term trace element and give an example. Trace elements are elements most organisms need only in trace amounts of to survive. They vary from organism to organism. For example, only vertebrates need iodine. -minute part of organisms -still necessary for survival -iron goes in hemoglobin which is essential 4. Draw and label a simplified model of an atom. Explain how this model simplifies our understanding of atomic structure. This model simplifies the atom by basically using reductionism and dividing it
