GEOL 0820 Ramsey Natural Disasters Spring, 2011 Date: 13 January 2011 I. In the News: Flooding in Australia more than 15,000 properties in 50 Brisbane suburbs have been affected by flood waters o peaked at 14.6 feet (4.5 meters) today o large areas of the city are covered in dirty water and mud o some evacuees have been told they will not be able to return to their homes for months o flooding has killed 15 people and affected an area bigger than Texas and California combined for more than five weeks now II. From the “big picture” to the VERY small one! from large-scale hazards to the scale of atoms critical for understanding the building blocks of geology we will not spend as much time on this subject as other introductory geology classes o you will get a good review in the recitation o next class we’ll examine how minerals combine into common rock types III. What is a mineral? definition: a naturally occurring, inorganic solid with a specific chemical composition and a specific regular arrangement of atoms o very precise definition and they have specific physical and chemical properties
