TERMINOLOGY FOR KINSHIP REPORT I Exogamy – marriage outside the group Edogamy – marriage within a particular group Hypergamy – union of a female with a male of higher status Hypogamy – union of a female to a male of lower status Divorce – the end of a marital union Family of Orientation – family you were raised in Family of Procreation – family you began when you left home Nuclear family – a family unit consisting of parents and their dependent children Extended family – a domestic group or composite of domestic groups consisting of two or more nuclear families linked together through parent and child or through siblings Fictive Kin – friends, godparents, blood brothers Bilateral (Kinship) Kinship traced to relatives through both father and mother Bilateral Descent – inheritance is through both mother and father Matrilineal – mother centered Patrilineal – father centered Affinal ties – ties by marriage Consanguinal ties – ties by blood Mater
