Technology: Benefit or Handicap in Raising Generation Z? 2 Technology: Benefit or Handicap in Raising Generation Z? Is it worth the cost? Over the past 20 years, technology has changed tremendously. In this age, we are facing new challenges in the way we raise the future generation not only at home but also how the educational system teaches our children at school. Children and adolescents of the 21 st Century find it already difficult to imagine completing a research paper in a library with books and writing it by hand on paper versus researching and typing the same on a personal computer. However, we can ask any teenager how to send and receive texts or e- mails on a cellular phone. We are exposing ourselves to technology that make our lives easier, but is it possible the same technology can cause Generation Z to become obese or depressed, or even have difficulty communicating with their peers because of anger outbreaks or lack of social skills? It may be important to discuss that even though technology aids in the school and educational aspects, it can also sabotage the way we raise our children, for when they have to become members of society. Kessler (2011) stated,”Technology is helping teachers to expand beyond linear, text- based learning and to engage students who learn best in other ways. Its role in schools has evolved from a contained “computer class” into a versatile learning tool that could change how we demonstrate concepts, assign projects, and assess progress.” (Para.3) Although, it is frowned upon to use technology during school hours, students are asked to use computers to start research papers, complete homework, and to explore ideas for the science fair projects using the World Wide Web, at a young age. It is unlikely and unheard of that a student or his or her family does not own a personal computer in this era, therefore the Internet and all of its resources is at the child’s fingertip when necessary and convenient. While one side argues that technology is the way to look toward the future and how schools educates its children, the other side argues that so much technology is not educational and rather corrupts the school age
