Critical Thinking Critical thinking is a crucial part of the scientific method. After carefully acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting data, critical thinking is used to reach a purposeful, well-justified conclusion based on that data. Critical thinking employs logic and considers such criteria as clarity, credibility, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, significance and fairness. Logic is the study of argument — the art and science of reasoning. Logical Thought Different professions have different standards for logical arguments. Few people believe that they are completely illogical. What do different people mean by logical thought anyway? This is an important question. One of the reasons that we teach math and science to all students in the country is to promote logical thinking. Precisely what form this logical thinking should take, and how learning math and science are supposed to produce it, are questions often ignored. Let’s look at the popular image of the famous logical thinker Sherlock Holmes. Here’s how this (purely fictional) detective works: “Beyond the obvious facts that he has at some time done manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a Freemason, that he has been in China, and that he has done a considerable amount of writing lately, I can deduce nothing else...” Mr Jabez Wilson laughed heavily. “Well, I never!” said he. “I thought at first that you had done something clever, but I see that there was nothing in it, after all.”

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
