Phys205L ATOMIC SPECTROSCOPY 1. Object : To measure the wavelength of radiation emitted by different excited atoms and to analyze the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. 2. Equipment : Optical Spectrometer, grating, gas discharge tubes (Hydrogen, Mercury, Neon); sodium lamp and power supplies. 3. Theory : Most light sources emit light of more than one color, i.e light waves of more than one wavelength. This light can be broken up into its component colors using an optical spectrometer . The display of intensities as a function of the wavelength is called a spectrum. Optical spectroscopy is the study of these spectra and has contributed much to the knowledge of the structure of atoms and molecules. The light emitted by atomic gases in a discharge tube is due to the motion of electrons in the atom and by studying this light, information can be obtained on the electronic structure, which determines the physical and chemical properties of the atom. The wavelengths of the lines in the spectrum are characteristic for the element emitting the light. Hydrogen atoms, for example, give a set of lines in the visible wavelength region.
