Kaitlin Pham Professor Preston English 134 October 21, 2010 Written Assessment for Fresh Voice Essays #2 Short story, “Save Their Lives, Save Their Futures” by Liliana Cervantes was baffling. The initial title gave a spot of a serious tone, and urges readers to continue. A boy, Marco Reyes, is introduced who was killed in gang violence. He was not affiliated with the gang, but his brother was. His loose association with the gang brought the end to his life. Cervantes leaves the reader mesmerized as they are quickly hit with a serious matter. Statistics filter through the paragraph and the thesis wraps up the paper very well: “The community, as well as the state, should be more concerned about finding ways to help our youth and keep them away from such brutal violence.” After the initial shock of the first paragraph, readers are eased into more information about gangs. It is reasoned that teens are pressured to join gangs for a feeling of a family, a tight knit group. Many join when they are young and desire for affection and support that gang life
