Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes. Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs, micro blogging, wikis, podcasts, photographs or pictures, video, rating and social bookmarking. By applying a set of theories in the field of media research (social presence, media richness) and social processes (self-presentation, self-disclosure) Kaplan and Heinlein created a classification scheme for different social media types in their Business Horizons article published in 2010. According to Kaplan and Heinlein there are six different types of social media: collaborative projects, blogs and micro blogs, content communities, social networking sites, virtual game worlds, and virtual communities. Technologies include: blogs, picture-sharing, v logs, wall- postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowdsourcing, and voice over IP, to name a few. Many of these social media services can be integrated via social network aggregation platforms 2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society? Social media relates to the community living of a free society, a global village concept of communication, information, as well as entertainments. It means a blending of arts and cultures, like a ubiquitous 'melting pot' of American memes. It is the media of social interaction in a modernist sense. A meme is a unit of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, which can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures. The term Internet meme is used to describe a concept that spreads swiftly via the Internet. 3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? The greatest problems of social media for individuals and society are the dissemination of useless facts, rumors etc. The interaction can be addicting and has kept people from the normal social functions. 4.
