Hannah Bauss Psy 254 10/6/09 Reflection Paper 1 Carl Whitaker wrote that “There are no individuals in the world – only fragments of families.” My own family system both supports and rejects this viewpoint. Parts of our family system do represent fractions of a family that when come together make a whole. But there are other areas where we are each our own individual person outside of our family unit. All families have hierarchies, boundaries, rules, and communication processes but they are not universally the same for every family. In my family, there are very few hierarchal systems and the few that we do have are very loosely based. My mom and dad are obviously above my sister and I on the main hierarchal scale simply because they are the parents and we are the children and they have always taken excellent care of us so we have never felt the need to “rebel” and upturn this scale so that my sister and I run the house, which can occur in other households. But between my parents, there is not hierarchy.
