MECH 210 080825 Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering h Engineers design and fabricate products using various types of materials h Materials used can be existing, modified, or new materials h Material properties are controlled by micro- or macro-structure in the material which can be changed with chemical composition and processing methods. The four components of the discipline of materials science and engineering and their linear interrelationship are h Materials science is concerned with basic knowledge of the relationships between the structures and properties of materials Materials engineering is concerned with the designing, processing, and structural modification to produce a predetermined set of properties of materials. Major Types of Engineering Materials h Metallic – combination of inorganic metallic elements (but may contain some organic material), crystalline, have free electrons, good electrical and thermal conductivities, not transparent, relatively strong with reasonable ductility
