MECH 210 081020 Phase Diagrams Phase : A homogeneous portion of a material that has uniform physical (structure and properties) and chemical (composition) characteristics throughout. Component : A chemical constituent (element or compound) of an alloy, can be used to specify the alloys composition. Solubility : The amount of one material (or element) that can completely dissolve in a second material (element) without creating a second phase. Solubility limit : The maximum concentration of solute (minor concentration) material/element that may dissolve in the solvent (major concentration) material/element to form a solid solution. Isomorphous alloy : Alloys having the same crystal structure or complete solid solubility for all compositions. Phase diagram : A graphical representation of the relationships between composition, environmental constraints (primarily temperature and sometimes pressure), and regions of phase stability under conditions of equilibrium. (schematic phase diagram in Figure 1) Liquid phase is labeled as L or Liquid while solid phases are labeled in Greek alphabets. Binary phase diagram
