Exam 3 Study Guide Topics to know are listed below. Not all will be tested. Nearly every question will require you to combine knowledge or skills from multiple topics. Chapter 8 o Spin quantum number - has values of either + 1 / 2 or - 1 / 2 . Thus, each electron in an atom is described completely by a set of four quantum number: the first three describe its orbital, the fourth describes its spin o Pauli exclusion principle - no 2 electrons in the same atom can have the same set of quantum numbers. o Shielding, penetration, and energy-level splitting - Book page 306-307 o Aufbau principle -(German for “filling up) and stands for how e - take up the orbitals from the smallest to the largest. o Electron configurations, orbital diagrams - Look in book page 308-316 o Periodic trends Atomic size - Increases as you move to the left and down the P.T. Ionization energies (multiple) - Increases as you move to the right and up the P.T. Electron affinity - Increases as you move to the right and up the P.T. Metallic behavior - Increases as you move to the left and down the P.T. Acid-base behavior of oxides - Lower left is most basic and the upper right is the most acidic o Ions Configurations - Look in book page 328 Magnetic behavior - only chemical species with one or more unpaired electrons are affected by the external field. Paramagnetic means its magnetic and diamagnetic means is NOT magnetic. Size- Ionic size is an estimate of the size of an ion in a crystalline ionic compound. Cations are smaller than their parent atoms and anions are larger than their parent atoms. Chapter 9 o Lewis dot symbols - diagram where the electron symbol represents the nucleus and inner electrons, and the surrounding dots represent the valence electrons. (the pattern of dots repeats for each group). See page 343
