MSC 243 HOMEWORK 3: UPPER AIR DYNAMICS Due on Tuesday, October 25 th 2011 Goals: To analyze upper-level maps and the influence of upper-air patterns on weather systems at the surface. REFRESHER: Fronts, advection, mid-latitude cyclones (0 pts) 0a. The University of Illinois online meteorology guide has a nice introduction to air masses and fronts. Read through the pages on Air Masses, Fronts and Advection linked from http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/af/home.rxml . Make notes on any key points that may not be clear from the lectures. Main things to know: Properties of mT and cP air masses. Characteristics of stationary, cold, warm and occluded fronts. Occlusion process. Advection, e.g. of temperature. We will cover vorticity advection later in this exercise. 0b. Read through the guide on mid-latitude cyclones (including links and sublinks) on http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/mtr/cyc/home.rxml . Main things to know: General presentation of a mid-latitude cyclone and warm and cold fronts on (i) surface weather map, (ii) satellite images. Wind flow near low and high pressure systems and fronts. Trough and ridge axes. 1

These station models are plotted from rawinsonde (weather balloon) observations which are released twice daily at 00 UTC and 12 UTC. There are fewer rawinsondes than surface observing
