GENERAL TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN MATHEMATICS Success in any mathematics course requires adequate skills from lower level mathematics courses. Be honest with yourself. If it has been a while since your last mathematics class and/or if you feel uncertain about material covered in the first week of class, truthfully consider whether or not you have the skills to be successful in your current math enrollment level. Once the census date has passed, a withdrawal will count as an attempt under the three-peat rule. With the necessary skills, following these suggestions should contribute to your success in mathematics: 1. Attend ALL classes. 2. Exchange contact information with fellow student(s)--only phone or e-mail information that you are comfortable sharing. 3. Do ALL homework assignments when assigned and check your answers.

Unformatted text preview: Failure to prepare is preparing to fail. 4. Do ALL lab assignments when recommended, recognizing areas that need more practice prior to the classroom test. 4. Get help as soon as you need it —see your syllabus for resources available through Collin College. 5. Stay organized throughout the semester. 6. Read the textbook—Reading a mathematics textbook is not like reading a novel. Go step-by-step, following examples and working along. Your textbook has practice exercises for students to try, with the answers in the back of the book. 7. Ask Questions!! Most students will have questions from time to time. Generally, when one student has a specific question, many others have the same question. BE THE ONE to speak up and ASK that question. 8. Keep a positive attitude....
