Unformatted text preview: The Pulsar Magnetosphere and its Role in Beaming Radiation Chetiya Sahabandu Department of Physics University of Cincinnati Cincinnati, Ohio 45221 December 3, 2001 Abstract A simple model is developed for the magnetosphere of a rotating aligned neutron star. It is shown that charged particles can be pulled out of the surface of the star by electric fields of the order of 10 10 V/cm. The beaming radiation process which is a consequence of the acceleration of these particles is briefly discussed. 1 1 Introduction 1.1 Neutron Stars The existence of a self gravitating body consisting mainly of neutrons was first pointed out by L.D. Landau in 1932. Baade and Zwicky [2] independently proposed the existence of neutron stars in 1934 and also stated that a supernova can change an ordinary star into neutron star. The first theoretical calculations of the structure of a neutron star were made by Oppenheimer and Volkoff [4] in 1939. They assumed the star to consist of an ideal Fermi gas of Neutrons. This model though crude yielded the main features of a neutron star. It set an upper limit to the mass of the neutron star: M < 1 . 7 M o . 1.2 Pulsars A pulsar is an object that emits short periodic pulses of radiation. Pulsars were first discovered in 1967 by J.
