Arranged Marriages in India versus Love Marriages in the United States Jala 2 The research topic that the author chose is about arranged marriages versus love marriages. The author is enraged that many people believe that Arranged marriages are forced marriages when that is not true at all. The ethical problems that this issue presents is that many people who have arranged marriages are looked down upon and many Westerners are against it but they do not even know what arranged marriages truly are. This topic was selected due to personal reasons of being an Indian female of marriageable age and soon to be, one of subjects written about in these studies of arranged marriages. Asians are not the only people who practice arranged marriages since Muslims, Jewish, Amish, some Mormons, some Greeks, and African people do too. Compromise, mutuality, and chemistry are three of the reasons that the author believes make arranged marriages work. One thing that the Western world forgets is that arranged marriages happened in every culture until the last few centuries. One major misunderstanding about Arranged Marriages is that the Western World believes that an arranged marriage still means that a man and woman have met for the first time on their wedding day. That has not been the case for decades because many arranged marriage couples either meet at least six months to a year prior to the wedding. Arranged marriages last longer and arranged marriages are the typical Desi family affair, love marriages can last for a long time but people fall out of love and get divorced, arranged marriages have changed to adapt to the 21 st Century of Internet, and nowadays, in arranged marriages the children choose whom they marry but the parents have to meet the choice. Diverse from American culture is the culture of vibrant India. In Indian culture, the morals of the family are given more importance than that of a person’s own values (Kalman, 2009). The abiding principles behind an arranged marriage remain strong – lust does not a lasting marriage make and family knows best (Alvarez, 2003). Many people think that arranged marriages actually do work out better than love marriages do. Arranged marriages may prove more fulfilling than marriages of love when two people bring nothing but love to the relationship (Jewett & Shuster, 1996). Arranged marriages are still popular because many children still think that their parents know them best.
