Pressure Ulcers
– Is there a
pathophysiologic
relationship?
The elderly is at an increased risk for pressure ulcers, Alzheimer’s
Disease is one factor that increases that risk and that risk factor
multiplies as the disease progresses.
Action item: Examine the relationship between the neurological
and the integumentary system. Identifying and discussing how
Alzheimer’s as a risk factor increases the risk of pressure ulcer.
As the disease progresses and memory deteriorates a patient
may forget to eat and this is further compounded in the elderly
who as they aged looses their taste.
Action item: Discuss the role of nutrition in preventing and/or
treating pressure ulcers in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
