The elderly is at an increased risk for pressure ulcers, Alzheimer’s Disease is one factor that increases that risk and that risk factor multiplies as the disease progresses. Action item: Examine the relationship between the neurological and the integumentary system. Identifying and discussing how Alzheimer’s as a risk factor increases the risk of pressure ulcer. As the disease progresses and memory deteriorates a patient may forget to eat and this is further compounded in the elderly who as they aged looses their taste. Action item: Discuss the role of nutrition in preventing and/or treating pressure ulcers in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.
