REVIEW OF SOLVING ALGEBRAIC EQUATIONS Solving by Factoring: a) x 2 + 6 x – 16 = 0 Look for two numbers that multiply to be –16 and add to be 6. –16 and 1 –8 and 2 –4 and 4 –1 and 16 –2 and 8 x 2 + 6 x – 16 = 0 ( x – 2)( x + 8) = 0 So, either x – 2 = 0 or x + 8 = 0 x = 2 or x = –8 b) 2 x 2 x – 3 = 0 This will factor into something of the form: (2 x ? )( x ? ) Use trial and error with factors of –3. (2 x – 3)( x + 1) = 2 x 2 + 2 x – 3 x – 3 = 2 x 2 x – 3 Yes (2 x + 1)( x – 3) = 2 x 2 – 6 x + x – 3 = 2 x 2 – 5 x – 3 No (2 x + 3)( x – 1) = 2 x 2 – 2 x +3 x – 3 = 2 x 2 + x – 3 No (2 x – 1)( x + 3) = 2 x 2 + 6 x x – 3 = 2 x 2 + 5 x – 3 No 2 x 2 x – 3 = 0 (2 x – 3)( x + 1) = 0 So, either 2 x – 3 = 0 or x + 1 = 0 x = 3 / 2 or x = –1 c) 9 x 2 – 6 x + 1 = 0 This will factor into something of the form: (9 x ? )( x ? ) or (3 x ? )(3 x ? ) Use trial and error with factors of 1. (9
