Research essay Writing a research paper for your English class Research Essay ± Research papers tend to be long-range projects (more steps involved: additional reading and analysis of sources) ± They involve integrating and documenting source material ± You need to begin with an arguable issue and a claim ± You need to marshal evidence to defend that claim ± You need to present that evidence persuasively to convince an audience that the claim has merit ± Primary research source – story, poem, play, essay on which the paper is focused ± Secondary research source- historical, biographical, cultural, and critical documents – to support claims Identifying an Issue and a Tentative Claim ± The more interested you are in an issue, the better your paper will be ± Issues of theme, symbolism, pattern, or genre ± Contextual issues of social policy ± Author’s biography, culture, or historical period ± Do not look for simple issues that can answered with a few factual statements ± Try to discover a topic that will challenge you to perform
