HYPOTHESIS TESTING PROCEDURE GIVEN: A claim about μ (with unknown σ); p or σ; Experimental data or statistics (, s, x, n, p-hat or s); Significance Level (α) From the CLAIM and COUNTER CLAIM determine H 0 and H 1 and determine the TAILS (right, left or two tailed). Decide which method to use (Critical Value or p-value) Critical Value p- value From Test Statistic and tails of test, determine p-value From experimental data, calculate TEST STATISTIC From experimental data, calculate TEST STATISTIC From α and tails of test, determine Critical Value and the Critical Region Compare p-value to α. (Double p-value if Two Sided) Determine if Test Statistic is in the Critical Region If Test Statistic is in the Critical Region, reject H 0 ; if not, fail to reject H 0 . If p-value < α, reject H 0 . If p-value > α, fail to reject H 0 . State a conclusion about the null hypothesis (REJECT OR FAIL TO REJECT and the conclusion about the claim.
