CEE 4674 A3 Trani Page 1 of 8 CEE 4674: Airport Planning and Design Spring 2009 Assignment 3: Runway Safety Areas and ATC Date Due: Feb/19/2009 by COB Instructor: Trani Problem 1 A new runway is to be designed to accommodate the Airbus A340-600 (i.e., critical design aircraft). The airport is to be located at sea level conditions in tropical Florida (the new West Bay airport near Panama City, Florida). After consultation with the airlines, the critical stage length calls for a desired takeoff weight of 360,000 kilograms to serve cities in Eastern Europe. The airline in question has Airbus A340-600 with Rolls-Royce RB 211 Trent 556 engines. For information on the Airbus A340-600 follow the internet links in our Interesting Web Sites – section related to aircraft manufacturer documents for airport design. The runway is to be designed for all weather conditions including visibility conditions less than ¾ of a mile and thus allowing reliable operations in inclement weather. i) Determine the dimensions of the following runway design elements: a) Find the runway length (assume zero grade) to satisfy the airport design conditions
