Spore-Dispersing Vascular Plants - 8 Isoetae ( Isoetes ) The single genus, Isoetes , is an aquatic plant, although some species grow in marshy areas where ponds dry for some periods. Isoetes is considered most closely related to the fossil tree Lycophytes. All Isoetes have a basal underground stem (corm) from which adventitious roots and elongated (quill-like) microphylls grow. The corm has a cambium and secondary growth. The microphylls have a definite spiral growth pattern. They superficially resemble a clump of grasses. Some microphylls reach lengths of 12” or more.
