Isoetesis considered most closely related tothe fossil tree Lycophytes.All Isoeteshave a basal underground stem (corm) from which adventitious roots andelongated (quill-like) microphylls grow. The corm has a cambium and secondarygrowth. The microphylls have a definite spiral growth pattern. They superficiallyresemble a clump of grasses. Some microphylls reach lengths of 12” or more.
