Unformatted text preview: Introduction to Renal System In 1901, Starling appropriately recognized kidneys as regulatory , rather than excretory organs. The excretory function of the kidneys is central to their ability to regulate the- composition - volume of the body fluids. We will explore various aspects of renal physiology in this course. Major functions of the kidneys are: 1. Regulation of body fluid osmolality and volume 2. Regulation of electrolyte balance 3. Regulation of acid-base balance 4. Excretion of metabolic products and foreign substances 5. Production and secretion of hormones (e.g., erythropoietin) 6. Secrete enzyme renin , which activates hormonal mechanisms (angiotensis, aldosterone) control BP and electrolyte balance . 7. Contribute to calcium homeostasis through their role in synthesizing calcitrol (Vitamin D) We will consider an overview of the functions of the kidneys to provide a broad perspective. Functions of the Kidneys 1.
