Nightingale, Ph.D. Office Location: 138 Administration Building E-mail: Phone: (563) 884-5317 Website: Office hours: MTWH 1:00-1:50PM; Or by appointment none PREREQUISITE TO: Biochemistry II (PHCH 52305), Endocrinology (PHCH 52338) Course Description This role of this course is to serve as the foundation for several basic science courses. Lecture topics include the structures, functions, digestion and absorption of biologically important molecules, including carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Enzyme kinetics, regulation of enzyme activity, and maintenance of pH in the body will also be discussed. Normal and abnormal physiology related to these biologically important molecules will be considered. Laboratory procedures work to demonstrate clinical applications of biochemistry related to lecture material. Learning Outcomes Knowledge Identify building blocks of biomolecules & structural components of each List common biochemical reactions Describe biological functions of each macronutrient in health & disease List food sources of each macronutrient Name the storage location of each macronutrient in the human body Explain the impact of functional groups on the role of each biomolecule Describe functions of each class of enzymes Describe enzyme kinetics Explain the movement of food through the digestive tract Recognize secretions, enzymes, hormones, & specialized physiology necessary f or digestion & absorption of nutrients Describe the transportation of macronutrients in the blood Describe digestion and absorption of nutrients in the digestive tract Explain the clinical significance of blood chemistry values Explain the role of oxidation in the body Recognize the importance of the macronutrients, vitamins & minerals in health & disease states Interpret evidence informed concepts Skills In a small group, organize reports around laboratory data Critically evaluate data sources related to biochemistry Find articles and be able to identify and interpret evidence informed concepts Attitudes Value the impact of nutrition in health and disease Value the impact evidence has on the chiropractic profession Required Course Materials 1.
