The Greco Roman Influence on America 2 During the time period of 146 B.C. to 300 AD, much of Mediterranean region and Europe was heavily influenced by the Roman and Greek cultures. These cultural influences included areas such as government, family structure and roles and the rise of Christianity. The history of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, in many ways, can be defined by this period of time, known as the Greco-Roman period. It is this period of time that America’s founding fathers looked towards in establishing the foundation of this country. To better understand how and why America was formed as it was, we must also understand the history of the Ancient World. I. Understanding the Classical World A. The study of the Ancient world became the inspiration for the Modern world. (Holborn, 1953, p.35) 1. The Ancient world was studied during the 15 th – 18 th centuries ( Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th Edition; 7/1/2010, p1-1, 1p) 2. America’s founding fathers drew inspiration from Greek and Roman history.
