a)PregnancyDevelopmental foetology explains the different stages of pregnancy:thezygoteresults from fertilization; it travels down thefallopian tube, while dividing to form more cells. It exists forabout four days, and becomes ablastocyst(a mammalianblastula in which some differentiation of cells has occurred)on the fifth day. Implantation in the uterus takes place, and itthen develops into anembryo, and into afoetus(with humanlimbs formed). The generic name isunborn child.(See photosof embryos in development:“Miracle_of_Fetal_Development.ppt” at.)Pregnancy is a lengthy process, interpersonalfrom the start. Awoman conceives, and a man begets. The mother ispregnant, the father isassuming responsibilityfor the child, and thechild isdeveloping. And God is the ‘owner’ of this new lifeentrusted to the parents – as if He says: “this ismybaby, notyours: take good care of it.” A pregnancy is never a “private”issue. Some weeks later, it becomes apublicissue. After conception occurs, the parents change theirstatus. First, legally, before society: they become custodian of a new member, withrights and duties. Secondly, medically: the motherexperiences a number of bodily changes that need specializedattention (the woman is inherently fit for caring for new life –physically, affectively, etc.). Thenfinancially: newcommitments and needs arise, such as diet, healthcare, clothing, etc. Also, they acquire a new statusbefore God:they arepro-creators, theybindGod, and theyworkwith God.There is ample medical evidence of the awareness that the unbornchild has of its surroundings, especially of sound. This haslead to advising parents to “talk” and “sing” to the child.Note that “pregnancy” is a medical term, correct but partial, useful inmedical treatment. But it does not express the full reality. It ismore correctly termed “unborn child.” So, an “unwantedpregnancy” is in reality an “unwanted child;” “termination ofpregnancy” is in truth “murdering a person.”In summary: pregnancy is a “happy experience” for the whole family(Pontifical Council for the Family,The Truth and Meaning ofHuman Sexuality,Rome: 1995, no. 76). It is a unique humanexperience involving the four actors mentioned above.Bibliography: John and Rosalyn Muthiora, Celebrating New Life. b)Right to life of the unbornThe right to life of the unborn is clearly grounded on data fromscience and on ethical reflection. Hence the correspondingduty or responsibility arises – the legal defense of the right tolife of every unborn child: society must protect every embryo:The inalienable right to life of every humanindividual from the first moment of conception is aconstitutive element of civil society and its legislation. Whenthe State does not place its power at the service of the rightsof all and in particular of the more vulnerable, including
