As discussed last week, Impressionism is often referred to as the beginning of modern art. How are the modern styles you studied this week descended from Impressionism? How might these styles also be reactions against Impressionism? This week (along with every week), I learn about different styles of art that resemble the previous form of art that I learned about in the previous week. However, those same forms of art that I learned about this week diverge from the other forms that I learned about in the previous week. This week will be no different. For this week’s learning journal, I will compare and then contrast the style of impressionism to the styles of Expressionism, Dada, Cubism and Surrealism. Impressionism vs. Expressionism At face value, the words impressionism and expressionism should automatically be opposite. However, there are similarities. For one thing, impressionism and expressionism are two art forms that are born put of expressing freedom and expression. Both styles of art are based on the real world.
