Elise Kim ANSC 101 11/10/10 Issue Paper Military Sonar Affecting the Whales and Dolphins When it comes to animal and human interactions, there are many problems that derive from these and one example is the issue of military sonar that causes strandings of dolphins and whales. To people’s concerns, it is important to protect all animals from danger in order to avoid extinction. It is also significant to protect their country from enemies by using military sonar. In the article, “Military Sonar Blamed for Mass Dolphin Strandings”, the writer, Lewis Smith explains how sonar can be a reason why there are many dolphin and whale corpses on shores. Smith begins by explaining a test that proved how sea mammals’ sense of “hearing can be lost for 40 minutes on exposure to sonar” (Smith 1). The loss of hearing is detrimental to these cetaceans because they rely on it to navigate; by losing their sense of hearing, they are blinded and become vulnerable.
