ENSC 3313, Spring 2004 Quiz 5 ANSWERS Name ________________________________ Answer any 4 questions only , 1 point each 1. The two most common hardness scales in the USA are Brinell and Rockwell. The Brinell utilizes a 10mm tungsten carbide ball, a 3000 kg load and hardness is measured as load/indentation area. You have used the Rockwell B scale (HRB). What is a) the indenter, b) the load, and c) what is the measure of hardness? a) a 1/16 inch diameter hardened steel (or WC) ball b) 100 kg c) depth of penetration Such a test is easy to do and has a dial read-out, so was developed for use by unskilled personnel in industry. The surface does not have to be prepared. Ref text, ~p 135-40. Note the Brinell test is ASTM ,E10 and the Rockwell is ASTM, E18 2. Name and give a brief description of three ways to strengthen a metal that we discussed in class. 1) Grain size refinement – Grain boundaries represent a discontinuity in the orientation of the crystal lattice and, therefore, a barrier to dislocation motion. If you decrease the size of the grains, you automatically increase the number of grain boundaries and strengthen the material.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
