A gear made from 8620 steel was quenched in oil from the austenite phase to achieve high strength. However, testing revealed that the hardness of the gear was less than the required 30 HRC. Give two alternatives for achieving the required hardness using an 86xx alloy steel. One solution would be to change the quenching medium (perhaps to water) or stirring the quenching bath such that the cooling rate is >~50 o C/s. Another solution would be to use a different carbon content. If we used 0.4 wt% C (8640) then the hardness would be within specification even for slow cooling. A third solution may be a combination of increasing C
