Wilson’s reading: Main argument: policies should include a combination of socio and econ welfare. Workfare = failure of socio. Imagination because only captures individuals not group as general – results in competition. does nothing for the ‘truly advantaged’ as a group ‘truly advantaged’ – not African Americans as a whole, but those in poverty in the abandoned and isolated inner-cities. Take them out of isolation. Policy solutions require institutional integration Ghetto underclass can’t just address present day discrimination. Affirmative action not enough: -benefits those AA who are already advantaged -present day job discrimination is not the only discrimination they’re facing, need to figure out what historically has created this situation Key terms: -historic discrimination: prior to mid 20 th century. Segregation (de facto & de jure) creates conditions for social isolation, low econ resources -contemporary discrimination: post mid 20 th century
