Gender difference and inequality Time bind- ch. 1-7, 9, 10, 13, 14 Paris is Burning: Gender – way in which gender is something that is performed, enact gender, show gender by acting, dressing, behaving, speaking certain way. There are punishments and costs to performing it inappropriately (Venus was killed) – he thought she was a different gender, because beliefs about appropriate gender are so deep Gender / Sex Conventionally, sex is the physical and genetic identity of a person based on agreed biological criteria (female or male) – criteria shifted over time though Gender is a social phenomenon, based on the real and perceived differences between men and women. Gender is socially and culturally created. Gender can vary with time and space. Criteria of thinking what is natural and biological – the criteria itself may be culturally constructed But in actuality, our ideas about what counts as biological criteria of sexual difference varies with culture. .so the difference between sex and gender is complicated
