Families Why does the motherhood penalty exist? 1) reduced investment in human capital (lower skills) 2) lower effort by mother (behavior) Gary Becker. Mothers dissipate their energies in looking after their children 3) discrimination against mothers because mothers are considered less productive and competent- also give mothers less money , promotion -participants expected mother’s intention focused more on children -mothers skills not valued -number of days being late- stricter stipulation of how many days mothers can be late -fathers not discriminated against, sometimes even favored -expectation of different behavior, in favor of third theory -ideal mother vs. ideal father clash culturally – opposites can’t exist for mother and worker, but for father its both cultural competing devotions, despite over 60% women work in workforce. Mismatches going on Family: Home considered a haven – a place of security, a haven in a heartless world Family : sense of community, lineage, marriage, blood Difference between family and other relationships: unconditional, Always there, support, respect for older generation , develop cultural
