Work: Problem thinking about solution is that economy demands more and more of your time. How do you save your time for the family? Something going on about shape of economy that’s powerful force in determining what we can and can’t do with our lives, exerts an influence on our abilities to spend time with family The economy is the institution that organizes the production, distribution and exchange of goods and services Primary sectors: logging, mining, farming, fishing relationship to the earth, taking things from the earth Secondary sectors: manufacturing: raw materials are turned into finished goods Tertiary sector: service sector: services bought and sold lawyers, teachers, etc covers the widest range of people US first to go primarily towards the service sector Two theories about capitalist economy. 1) deskilling thesis—Braverman: capitalists keep wages low by deskilling labor, need workers to produce goods, profit to keep going, some kind of
