Assignment #4 . CHM 2120 2009, T. Durst This assignment deals mainly with the first few lectures on aromatic chemistry. It also reminds you of the importance in being able to draw resonance structures and asks you to practice naming aromatic compounds. It also contains interesting questions involving Diels Alder chemistry and a number of reactions dealing with allylic carbocation reactions [kinetic vs thermodynamic control] We have not yet covered the material for several of the questions such as 5b and maybe 5g. 1. Supply a clear structure of a) meta dibromobenzene; b) 3-nitrotoluene; c) 2,6-dimethylphenol; d) 3,3, dichlorocylopentene, e) orthohydroxybenzoic acid , or salicylic acid; f) 2- acetoxybenzoic acid or acetylsalicylic acid; g) benzenesulfonic acid; h) 2,5 dichloroaniline,. 2. Name each of the following structures using either an acceptable trivial name or the IUPAC nomenclature. CH 3 CH 3 CH 3 f) g) CO 2 H Cl h) CH 3 NO 2 O 2 N NO 2 also known as TNT OH also known as BHT or 'butylated hydroxy toluene.
