Electrical, Computer, & Telecommunications Engineering Technology Micro Computers Spring 20073 0618-303 Homework #1 HOMEWORK #1 Due 3/21/08 1. Describe the functions of the three main hardware components of any microcomputer. CPU is the brains of the computer. It contains the Arithmetical and Logic Unit (ALU) and controls the operation of memory and I/O. Memory stores the program data (ROM) and the runtime data (RAM) I/O is the interface between the microcomputer and the outside world. Used for getting data into and out of the processor. 2. How is a microcontroller different than a personal computer? A personal computer is general purpose and performs a variety of tasks based on the software it is running. Its CPU, memory and I/0 are spread out on several different ICs. A microcontroller usually has one specific control application. Its processor, memory and I/O are all contained on a single chip 3. Why is the width of the SRAM on the ATmega128 8 bits? Because the internal registers of the ATmega128 are 8 bits wide, the data bus is limited
