Turnmeyer – REL212 – Assignment 2: Report on Religious Field Research I chose to do my research on Atheism. The major role in my decision on doing my field research on Atheism was because I really didn’t know a lot about the religion and I found it to be a very interesting chapter in the book. I also have a classmate in the class that is an Atheist and he has discussed many times in his discussion questions his belief and how Atheism works regarding certain aspects of our chapters. I found his posts to be very interesting and intriguing to me. Before doing the research, Atheism was a very confused religion for me. The most confusing part of the religion was; do Atheists feel that evolution is just a theory? My previous knowledge of this religion (which is one of the issues – it’s not a religion), as stated above, is very limited. Atheism is the absence of belief in gods. Yes, I understood that, but why do atheist not have any beliefs in Gods? That is one of my major questions when choosing this religion and while doing my research. Before doing the research, I felt Atheism just didn’t believe in anything, whether it is Gods, theory, etc. Atheism to me was a “non-religious” person. With that said, I knew going into this research that I would find a huge difference in my thought of the religion and what Atheism really is. I started off some of my research by watching “The Atheist Experience” with Russell Glasser and Jeff Dee from the August 21 st Ustream (723). It was stated on the show that, “You cannot force belief in god on anyone. If they are interested in talking about the gospel, then do; however don’t take the opportunity to inject your belief on everyone. It becomes counter annoying.” (Russell Glasser, the Atheist Experience 723) Within this webinar, they went over a lot of the interesting facts within Atheism. They also gave some astonishing facts and current up

One of the interesting facts I heard was that when President Obama took office, general society would vote a Muslim into presidency before they would an Atheist. Another was that after the raising of the debt ceiling, the “tea party” activists are now rated lower on that list than what Atheists are currently. Although they didn’t want to go
