2 Valjean vs. Javert What was each of their perspectives, and how did that influence their behavior/choices? In many ways, the tension between Valjean and Javert creates quite a bit of conflict. The story outlines a message of imperfection and justice. Valjean portrayed as a man who is consistently in trouble with the law. He is an ex-convict that strives for a high standard of morality. When he was young, he was punished for trying to feed his sister and her children. He went to prison as a decent man, but his jail time had an irreversible effect on him, causing him to have the mindset of a hardened criminal who hates society. Valjean sees the prison system as inhospitable towards humans. He ultimately opens his heart and is a testament to the saving power of love and compassion. He is a very sympathetic person who has a passion for a little orphan named Cosette. He rescues her from a horrible childhood, provides her with safety, and raises her as if she were his child. Javert is a corrupt police officer who makes it his priority to track down Valjean and try to keep him imprisoned. He is so wrapped up in enforcing society's laws and morals that he does
