Chapter 7 – Wireless Networks I Market Perspective o Wireless LANs ( unlicensed, self-managed ) Unlicensed : if wireless networks interfere there is no recourse taken Syracuse manages its own LAN Popular - Wifi is everywhere Companies are spending more on wireless LANs than on wired o 802.11n is replacing Ethernet as the dominant network o Access technology (New Std is 802.11ac which is close to 1 GB/sec) Wireless MANs/WANs ( licensed, carriers ) Smartphone market on fire with sales – 75% year to year Outside of single building/campus – covers a whole area o Exclusive access to certain geographical areas o If anyone tries to interfere legal action can be taken 3g/4g wifi offload – networks are getting faster (more people use them) Technological Perspective o Wireless medium is hostile System designed to overcome problems with wireless data transmission Arthur Clarke- “sufficient advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”
