Summary The story takes place in the year of 1949 during a funeral of the main character’s grandfather. John Grady Cole is the main character of the story, but the reader isn’t formally introduced to the character immediately, but through a slow and gradual process. Everyone is a grieving at the funeral, but John, the narrator/protagonist. decides to leave the house and begins daydreaming about how the native americans who roamed the land have become forgotten along with history. During his excursion, John finds a horse skull, reminding him of how much he cherished horses. When John returns from his mini trip, his dad begins to show signs of an illness due to cigars. From there on, the readers learn that his parents are split (split since 1942; mom lives in California). John’s father gives John a new saddle and John leaves off in a stranger’s car to watch his father in his hotel room while he is away from home. John’s mother is has authority over the ranch after the official divorce papers are recognized
