War of 1812 and The Era of Good Feelings I. Election of 1812 Madison won in 1808, and again in 1812 ^ This means that all but one of the Presidents are from Virginia Madison is a D-R, leader of the party along with Jefferson (he continues many of Jefferson’s policies) His 1 st 4 years went smooth, but in 1812 people start pushing for a war with England (in the Congressional elections) This is the first Congressional elections in which young guys are running and winning; many of the Revolution guys are retiring, most of these guys were born before or after the war ^ They didn’t leave with the hardship of war, only the gory and heroic aspect of it, so they don’t know real war (named War Hawks) A. War Hawks Thinking long term, that if the War is fought and successful then they will be revered in the political arena Bring up several reasons why the war should be fought: 1) American sailors are being mistreated by British on the sea; 2) Britain controls Canada, and is trying to get Native Americans in the Great Lakes region to fight against US citizens; 3) It’s an honor issue, because of British treats that American honor has been violated 1. Henry Clay (Kentucky) Speaker of the House, very dynamic, people loved him
