Intrinsic Extrinsic Motivation to be involved in an activity for  its own sake  - Aesthetic experiences  Study because they want to understand the  context Motivation to engage in an activity as a  means to an end  - May study for a test because they  believe studying will result in a  good grade  - Problem: the student may not  understand the material but rater  just does enough to “get by”  2. Value x Expectancy Theory a. A theory that explains learner motivation by saying that learners will be  motivated to engage in a task to the extent that they  expect  to succeed on  the task x the value they place on the success  b. Incorporate expectation: a belief about a future outcome  3. Intrinsic Cognitive Motivation  a. Self-Determination Theory: the motivational need to act on and control  one’s environment  a.i. Competence: ability to function effectively in the environment
