Stat 401 Lab Activity 1 Monday, February 16, 2004 Today’s activity will be an introductory lesson in using Minitab, a statistical software package. We will learn how to read data into Minitab columns, and how to perform basic data displays through graphs and diagrams. This is Part I of this activity. Part II of the activity is your homework #2. Part I : Data Description: MPa data: A study of strength properties of high-performance concrete obtained by using super plasticizers and certain binders. 27 measurements were taken from the study. Example 1.2 (p. 5 of Devore): flexural strength of concrete beams (MPa) 5.9 7.2 7.3 6.3 8.1 6.8 7.0 7.6 6.8 6.5 7.0 6.3 7.9 9.0 8.2 8.7 7.8 9.7 7.4 7.7 9.7 7.8 7.7 11.6 11.3 11.8 10.7 Stem-and-leaf display: 1. Graph > Stem and leaf 2. then select C1 by double clicking on it Stem-and-Leaf Display: C1 Stem-and-leaf of C1 N = 27 Leaf Unit = 0.10 1 5 9 3 6 33 6 6 588 11 7 00134 (6) 7 566889 10 8 11 8 8 6 7 9 0 6 9 66 4 10 4 10 6 3 11 3 2 11 68 A stem-leaf display tells us the following: Identification of a typical value (median) Extent of spread about the typical value Presence of any gaps in the data Extent of symmetry Presence of any outliers
