(ENB) said Tuesday it is expanding its solar power project in Sarnia, Ont., to 80 megawatts of maximum capacity , which will make it the largest solar power plant in North America when it's completed next year. The Calgary-based pipeline and utility company will invest C$300 million (US$283.2 million) to expand the Sarnia project from its initial phase of 20 megawatts, which was just completed and makes the Sarnia plant Canada's largest solar power facility. First Solar will oversee the construction of the second half of the project. The Sarnia plant will generate enough power for nearly 13,000 homes and replace the equivalent of 39,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year created by fossil-fuel power generation, Enbridge said. With the Sarnia plant, Enbridge has invested in 470 megawatts of renewable power. Sources include five wind energy projects and waste-heat recovery facilities.
