Group Name: ________________________ Members Present: Lab 2: Natural Selection and Genetic Drift Exercise 1: Natural Selection in a group of seed-eaters. 1. 4 varieties of seeds will be made available. Each group will select samples of 50 seeds from each available variety. 2. Each member of the group will then select from different implements provided to recover the seeds. Implements will include forks, spoons, knives, and tweezers (and perhaps others). Each member of the group will choose a DIFFERENT implement. So, a fork, spoon, knife, and set of tweezers will be present in each group. 3. Each group member will also receive a cup. After every member has a cup and a unique implement, place all seeds in one of your four cups. So, all seeds will be placed in a single cup; the other 3 members will have empty cups. 4. We will proceed outside to a designated area. Each group will need to bring this worksheet, their cup, and their implement. 5. On my signal, your group will toss the seed mix on the ground and then compete with one another to recover as many of the seeds as possible. You will have 1 minute. All captured seeds should be placed in your individual cup. 6. At the end of 1 minute, you will be given several minutes to sort and count the seeds you recovered. Please enter individual data in one of the tables below. Each person in the group should record their data in one of these tables. 7. When done sorting and counting, place all seeds back into 1 cup. Leave any unrecovered seeds on the ground. Find a slightly different spot than the one occupied previously and repeat 2 more trials under the direction of your instructor.
